Telecoms Switching

How can you find money here?

Like energy, it is usually cheaper (around 30%) and more convenient for charities with premises to switch to a business telecoms contract rather than a residential one for their broadband, fixed-line and mobile phones. The benefits of business telecoms contracts also include: outages being prioritised/fixed quicker and broadband speeds not affected by what your neighbours are watching!

BT has approximately 50% of the market and there are lots of other telecoms companies eager to win your business - some with specific charity packages. Whichever one you switch to, it is a good opportunity to review your set-up and move to a system that not only reflects your voice/data needs but takes advantage of the latest technology. With broadband, you are likely to be able to upgrade your account and, quite feasibly, actually end up with more speed for less money.

It is worth remembering that the biggest single deterrent to switching is that business telecoms contracts are often saddled with an Early Termination Fee. As such, check when your renewal window opens and your Contract End Date so you can pick the right time to shop around. Try your supplier’s online chat service to get hold of this information easily. Also, if your provider puts its prices up mid-contract - it has to write to let you know - and this automatically opens a 30 day window in which you can switch without penalty.

Using a charity switching service

A switching service will do all the hard work for you that would be time-consuming and potentially confusing without help.

A decent switching service like Make It Cheaper (our recommended choice) will also be able to help you avoid rolling back on to expensive tariffs in one or two years’ time when your fixed-term contract expires.

Other reasons to use a switching service for telecoms:

  1. Advice on the best options for your situation without pushing a product you don't need.
  2. Prices fixed for entire contract (usually 24 months) with a review call when it's coming to an end.
  3. 4x faster 'Fibre' broadband available in tw0-thirds of cases with no significant increase in cost.
  4. Typically 20-30% off current prices if choosing like-for-like.
  5. In-house customer service with no call wait times and whose job it is to sort out any problems.

We found your service very easy to use and everything was explained clearly. We saved over £500 which is massive for a charity like ours and the office manager was very pleased.

Doing it yourself

If you are happy to do it alone and call round different suppliers yourself, here are some tips:

  1. You'll need to get hold of your bills and establish your Contract End Date which should be on your original contract.
  2. If not in contract or within three months of a contract ending then set aside a day to request notes.
  3. There are hundreds of providers/resellers to choose from and you should contact a minimum of three.
  4. Be prepared for aggressive sales pitches, regardless of whether your needs have been properly understood.
  5. Don't end up paying for the wrong solution or overpaying for the right solution.
